This section will detail the weekly reports of the games played by Wherwell’s 1st XI team in 2017.

Longparish II vs Wherwell (away, 27/05/2017)

On an uneven wicket, Wherwell won the toss and put Longparish into bat. Wherwell started off well with the opening bowler’s S Taylor and O Emslie bowling disciplined line and length, only costing 26 runs in the first 10 overs. Wherwell got the first breakthrough in the 19th over when N Young bowled A Lister for 29 runs. H Trebert joined in the party with another breakthrough in the 22ndover to remove D Bearpark for 2, leaving Longparish 58 for 2. J Foster came into the attack and quickly removed J Blackmore for 10 and G Kousseff for 28, leaving Longparish 104 for 4 in the 32rd over. In came S Trinder, who took the attack to Wherwell. J Jackman also continued the scoring until S Taylor came back and removed him for 16. H Trinder’s stay was over when he was caught behind off O Emslie for 32. A slew of attacking intent meant that they ended their 45 overs at 193 for 8 leaving B Blackmore not out on 26 and A Samways for 4.

In reply Wherwell immediately lost their first wicket as opener C Beckingham was caught behind for a duck off C Clarke. But S Taylor and R Skeates took the Longparish bowlers to work, with Taylor getting another 50 in the process, highlight being two massive 6’s of S Trinder. S Taylor fell to an inswinger from J Blackmore for 54. In came B Smith, who carried on the scoring with R Skeates, who played a watchful innings until he was bowled for 49. Runs were frequent to come by, but so were the wickets, a flurry of wickets with total nearing ensured a nervy finish with N Horne taking Whewell home with two beautiful fours to lead Wherwell to a well-deserved win by one wicket.

Wherwell v Overton I (home, 06/05/2017)

Skipper S Taylor won the toss and elected to bowl first with plans to kick start the season with a strong bowling attack. A relatively green wicket, sunny overcast and some strong winds.

Things were looking steady for both sides averaging just under 4/over by the 9th when Overton’s opener was caught behind by N Young’s exceptional lack-of-spin offspin delivery. 6 overs later their #3 was caught by O Emslie off H Trebert. Things were looking brighter as it was an innings of catches for Wherwell at 96 for 4 off 22. Overton’s #2 – A Galvin – raised the game for Overton with a knock for 78 caught by R Skeates off O Emslie. Two quick wickets for Wherwell started to change the picture at 164 for 7 off 33, but a good performance by Overton’s middle order – R Brown – tested Wherwell even further with a knock of 76no.

Overton finished their innings 251 for 8. Key bowling perforamnce for Wherwell: N Young 36 for 2 off 10 and O Emslie 49 for 2 off 10.

Wherwell faced a challenging start to their season going out to bat. R Skeates (8) left the square after 6overs, however this enabled S Taylor with a quick fire 35 before unfortunately being caught. C Beckingham (16) was also caught but Wherwell still had a promising middle order. N Young started his season well with an excellent knock for 50 and put Wherwell in a much better position. Overton’s fielding attack proven tough on Wherwell as O Emslie (15) was close but no cigar ran out while the rest of the batting order seemed to fall through.

Overton were kept out to field for 43 overs until Wherwell were all out for 174.
