Wherwell started well taking 2 wickets in the first 10 overs for 19 runs. Longparish dug in and rescued their innings to score 229 for 8. J Jackman top scored with 83 and was provided great support by G Kousseff who scored a tough looking 58. O Emslie was impressive with the ball taking 3 wickets for 44 runs. Longparish hit back Wherwell with quick wickets and squeezed the runs. However the main act came from O Emslie who had been playing like a man on a mission, with 3 required from the last ball of the innings, he smashed the ball into the stands for a 6 to win the game for Wherwell. O Emslie ended on 56 not out. G Taplin was the pick of the bowlers for Longparish with 2 for 29.

Medstead v Wherwell (away, 04/08/2018)

KJM sponsored Wherwell CC traveled to Medstead for a must win game to keep promotion hopes alive. Skipper R Skeates finally won the toss and elected to bat first.

Wherwell started very brightly with the traditional C Beckingham 33 and R Skeates 15 duo. Unfortunately both were caught, a theme that all Wherwell batsman would follow. M Cutts 39 and O Emslie 24 saw through the majestic spin from Medstead on a popping track, but Wherwell top/middle order faltered until No.6 N Young took to the crease with a fresh 58no from his last innings. In good touch N Young set about the counter attack increasing the run rate, supported by J Trebert and A Cook. N Young rounded off with a great knock of 86no, finishing 237-8 in yet another day of cricket in blistering heat.

After a quick tea Wherwell took to the field. Openers J Foster 5o 26r 2w and H Trebert 9o 1m 38r 0w were tested in their first few overs but J ‘heellooo’ Foster (DoD) made the break through with a caught and bowled. O Emslie 8o 47r 0w and returning Wherwell star M Pettman 5o 1m 15r 0w bowled well as first changes but with little reward as Medstead started to knuckle down and chasing well with 92 off 21 for 2. N Young 9o 1m 27r 3w clearly not tired enough took a key wicket, taking the opportunity to foil Medstead’s run rate and middle order. R Skeates replied with his own majestic ball-fizzing spin 8.5o 1m 34r 1w. A Gladwyn rocketed a casual colin run out as Wherwell gained full control of the game and restricted Medstead to 202-7 after 45 overs.

Wherwell now 3rd in the league need to win all 3 games to secure 3rd place with outside chance of second. #upthewherwell

After a explosive start Wherwell managed to finally restrict the quick run rate with the introduction on N Youngs spin 4-36. Basingstoke managed to reach 206 all out from 43 overs. A massive effort from Wherwell was required. Beckingham and Skeates went about the task with ease scoring at 6 an over in the early stages. Beckingham soon fell playing a loose shot, Skeates however went on and scored an impressive 117 not out as Wherwell cruised to an 8 wicket victory.

Tichborne Park II v Wherwell (away, 19/05/2018)

The KJM Group Ltd sponsored Wherwell CC traveled to Tichborne Park looking to make it three wins out of the first three games.

Captain Robbie Skeates is yet to win the toss this season and was put out to field. Harry Trebert 9o 18r 2w and John Foster 9o 33r 2w got the ball rolling picking up quick early wickets bowling very well. Chances went against H Trebert with unfortunate luck against a strong partnership built up by the home team which tested Wherwell’s patience in the sun – Tichborne’s opener A Joyce scored 81 and N Connel 69. Ollie Emslie 9o 42r 3w and Matt Cutts 7o 31r 2w persevered and tied up the innings finishing 45 overs 200-9.

Craig Beckingham started his season with a bang hitting a very well made 46. Other opener R Skeates got his 3rd century for Wherwell with 101*. A selfless 10* from number 3 M Cutts saw the victory for Wherwell in 28.4 overs making it a convincing 9 wicket win, who look to make it four for four away to Donnington next week.

Old Basing II v Wherwell (away, 26/08/2017)

KJM Group Ltd sponsored Wherwell were away to Old Basing II for the last game of the season. Skipper S Taylor won the toss for the 2nd time this season and Wherwell elected to bat first.

The top order showed good composer with notable scores Stuart Taylor (81), putting Wherwell in a comfortable position cemented further by Alex Gladwyn’s (46) steady knock. Runs trickled through as wickets were slowly picked off by Old Basing II, walking off with 236 for 8.

Wherwell have not walked out to bowl this season with any doubts or lows – spirits as always were high to tie off the season positively. Wherwell kept Old Basing II on the backfoot throughout and kept the home team to a painfully low run rate. Notable performances S Taylor 9o 13r 2w, R Skeates 7o 23r 2w and Ollie Emslie 10o 18r 4w. Jug avoidance was not an issue with 5 catches.

Old Basing II stretched it out for Wherwell all the way reaching just 115 for 9. Wherwell won by 121 runs. Stuart Taylor finished his season scoring 749 runs.

Wherwell v Ramsdell (home, 19/08/2017)

KJM sponsored Wherwell played at home against promotion rivals Ramsdell in a crucial match that would decide either teams’ chances of going up this season. S Taylor lost his 11th toss for the season and was put out to bat on a mildy damp wicket.

Ramsdell had an impressive bowling attack with a double wicket maiden in the 6th over having Wherwell on the back foot. R Skeates showed patience early on but wickets tumbled through Wherwell’s usually dominant batting order leaving R Chetwynd-Talbot top scorer with 11. Not much to be said other than great bowling and fielding performances by the away team.

Wherwell were all out for 61 off 28.

The home team were up for a quick turn around and were eager to take the challenge on. Show no love has been the motto all season and stunning performances of bowling and fielding had Ramsdell 32 for 4 off 17. N Young took a tremendous diving running backwards catch off M Guilfoyle off the batsman that was just saved by the jam pot. At this point Wherwell had quickly picked off their top order but as the wicket dried with the sun shining, it was a quick fire 21 by their middle order that settled their nerves and took them to victory. Notable performances are S Taylor 7o 2w 17r, R Chetwynd-Talbot 8o 0w 16r and M Guilfoyle 3.5o 3w 14r.

Ramsdell won by 5 wickets.

St Cross IV v Wherwell (away, 12/08/2017)

KJM sponsored Wherwell played at St Cross on a gloomy day and skipper S Taylor lost the toss again and was put out to bat on a mildly damp wicket.

Incredible performances by the top order kept Wherwell flying high gunning for promotion. R Skeates and G Elwes gave Wherwell the steady start they needed, but after 15o R Skeates had enough and started pummelling. Whippersnapper Elwes enabled the top order and handed the baton to S Taylor who quickly picked up 104 peaking the run rate above 10 at one point before being bowled but leaving his side in a strong position of 237 for 2 off 27. R Skeates continued the plough and scored 118 with a surprising amount of cardio. A Gladwyn (26), M Guilfoyle (3no) and N Young (1no) saw the away team through to finishing 302 for 4.

Clear blue skies for Wherwell going out to bowl and maximum points were wanted. O Emslie started St Cross IV’s topple with two stump flying wickets while the others followed in quick succession. S Taylor 8o 3w 18r, O Emslie 10o 2w 26r, M Guilfoyle 5o 2w 13r, H Trebert 6.3o 2w 19r and N Young 5o 1w 14r.

With yet another win under their belt during an incredible season of tremendous team work, Wherwell still need to fight and show no love for their final two games to be in for winning the league and/or promotion.
