2nd of July, more memorable than independence day!
Wherwell Under 9s travelled to Michelmersh for a return match following their debut defeat back in May. Having been asked to bat first both Jason and Bailey got good reward for shots and also showed intelligence with their running. Wiliam LLoyd and Josh followed by William Tall and Owen also showed determination and with a pair from M&T providing added batting Wherwell totalled 69 from their 20 after penalties were deducted for lost wickets.
After a short break where the players appeared to have more energy than a duracell bunny Jason opened the bowling and took a good caught and bowled, a couple of overs later he claimed a second catch, Josh kept his cool for a run out and then took a good catch and a second run out saw the home side needing 10 to win from the final over. Bailey bowled a fine over from which only 7 were taken and this lead to broad smiles all round when they were confirmed as winners by 2 runs.
A great night thanks to M&T and a result to build on.
Wherwell Debut their Under 9s
With the Sun Beating down, finally, a long weekend of cricket started on Friday evening as for the first time ever Wherwell fielded a team at Under 9 level. This was a friendly match played against Michelemersh and Timsbury.
Wherwell were given the option to bat first and so a fascinating game began, the youngsters of Wherwell looked ready for a contest and the honour of hitting the first boundary went to William Lloyd with a trademark pull shot, the scoreboard kept ticking nicely and there was a very impressive middle spell of batting from Bailey Sampson-Bridgen who stroked 4 fours on his way to 21. Jason Griffiths also gave some good support as Wherwell closed on 50 from 18 overs.
In reply M & T got off to a slow start but there greater experience started to show as they worked the ball around and rarely gave up their wicket, William Lloyd and *** took wickets to keep the match tight. Despite some fine fielding M & T finally ran out victors by 6 runs. But on the night it wasn’t really about who won it was all about kids having fun.
