Wherwell v Kings Somborne (home)

31st July 2011

To Complete a full set Wherwell again lost the toss and were asked to field this time. Wherwell gave everyone a bowl and let the opposing team set a huge total of 248 from 40 overs. Alex Gladwyn the only bowler to get some rewards with 3 wickets for 42 runs.

Wherwell knew that chasing 248 would be a hard task but always knew they had the line up to chase it. Nathan Young scored 34, Alex Gladwyn 49 not out but the innings was based around Stuart Taylor who scored his first 100 For Wherwell to finish to 102 not out as Wherwell chased within 34 overs.

Wherwell v Crook & Shears (home)

24th July 2011

Wherwell played their first Sunday game for 4 weeks and hosted Crook & Sheers. Wherwell won the toss and decided to bat. Taylor and Cook started the show but both soon fell which left Beckingham and Alex Gladwyn to build an innings, Beckingham decided to try and hit out but was soon caught. Young joined Gladwyn and they both rotated the strike nicely. Gladwyn raced towards 50 and looked set to score his first ton for Wherwell but fell short on 82.  Nathan Young continued to bat sensibly and scored 51 before retiring.  A few big hits seen Wherwell score 240-5.

Wherwell decided to rotate the bowling taking wickets regularly as Crook and sheers struggled to keep up with the required run rate. This was their downfall as they tried a few too many big shots and kept losing wickets, They ended up 129 all out from 34 overs.  Nathan Young was the pick of the bowlers as his spin picked up 4 wickets for 11 runs.

Wherwell v Portway (home)

3rd July 2011

In a return from a fixture 2 weeks ago Wherwell won the toss and choose to bat first. Taylor and Horne took their time and got themselves in. Only for one to keep low on Taylor to remove his leg stump. Young stepped out to the crease wanting to spend some time at the middle which he did, not hitting a boundary till he was well into his 20's, Horne finally went for a stubborn 27 unfortunately for Portway this just brought in the big hitters as Nicel launched into the attack hitting the ball over the ropes with ease. Young reached his 50 and soon departed for a well crafted 59. Nicel continued to hit big and was soon scoring with a strike rate over 200. Nicel reached his 78 and decided a beer was required and retired and let the lower order have a bat. Wherwell finished 226-7 from 40 overs.

Portways reply never got going as Robbie Skeates got a beaut of a first ball to remove his middle stump. This set the tone for the portway innings as they batted in fear of the swinging ball. Various bowling changes were made and wickets fell at a steady rate. Pick of the bolwers were L Trebbert 2w 9 runs. The innings also seen its first as Nigel Murli Horne picked up his first ever wicket. Portway fell well short of the total as they were all out for 85.

Wherwell blow off the cobwebs

Summer appeared to arrive early and unfortunately seemed to catch us dosing as Wherwell played their 2 warm up games for the coming season.

Firstly they entertained Pheonix at Home, this would normally be a low scoring game played on a slightly damp strip with the ball doing all sorts. However a long dry March/April has resulted in a pitch more akin to Late July and it yielded little bowling assistance. With 400 runs scored at 5 an Over and it was a good run out resulting in a draw as Wherwell ended their overs 40 runs short of the total.

The second match proved a little less rewarding, travelling to Farley who will play Wherwell in the league later this season. Wherwell elected to bat first on a dry track and never really got going. Blackmore and Gladwyn both made starts before getting out and only a stubborn 46 not out from Nathan Young helped get the total to 129. This never looked to be enough despite some tight bowling from all of Wherwells seamers.

Young introduced himself to bowl "one legged" spin and managed to capture 2 wickets and a late run out for Scott Blackmore alos yielded a wicket but this couldn't prevent the home side cruising to a 7 wicket victory with 10 overs to spare.

again though, all the bowlers showed good rythm and will doubtless find more reward as the season progresses.
